Church – A Waste of Time?

I just read this quote on a friends Facebook status. Before I comment, I would love to know what you have to say?

“Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning.” ~Bill Gates

Are we discussing “church” or Christianity, or Sunday morning religious “services” or religion as some sort of morality delivery system, or what? “Efficient” has some sort of goal in view; something presumably measurable and obtainable. What’s the point?

I quit “going to church” when I got to the point that it was hindering my growth as a Christian. According to Frank Viola and George Barna, about a million people a year cross that threshold. But they don’t depart because they suddenly find better things to do on Sunday morning.

I have only read this quote as a quote, and can not find the context in which Mr. Gates said this, so some of your questions I can not speak to directly. For me the point is do we value peoples time and life enough to produce a worship service that can impact someone? Or do we just go through the motions because it is what we do on Sundays. I do think you can make three very clear distinctions between “the church,” a church service, and christianity. I am going to write a follow-up blog to this with all of my thoughts. Thanks for your comment, Steve. For me very thought provocative.

  2. I agree with Bill wholeheartedly.

I agree. Religion is a waste of time. Relationship with Jesus is a way different thing. Time spent on relationships is never a waste. I pray that Bill discovers relationship.
